The Nursing Planetary Health Report Card pilot was developed by a team of international nursing students and faculty, bonded through a passion for climate action and education. Our team included nurses from University of Virginia, University of Minnesota, University of Brighton (UK), University of Esslingen (Germany), and Lancaster University (UK). We sought to adapt the original Planetary Health Report Card to reflect the multifaceted curriculum and degrees under the nursing umbrella, as well as to account for the unique, personal care that is integral to nursing. We broadened many of the metrics so as to be inclusive to the different degrees in nursing, while focused in many of the metrics that involved bedside care, interprofessional collaboration, and administrative support of initiatives.
In our process, we learned an immense amount about the ways that the nursing school experience can vary, yet all have great potential to prepare nurses with planetary health education. Nurses have proved to be a cornerstone of healthcare, and as our society continues to face the ramifications of climate change, nurses have the ability to enact real change. As we roll out the pilot, we are excited to discover the strengths and limitations of our new report card. By establishing the first round of results, we seek to distribute the card internationally as best as possible. Our hope is that all the involved programs can begin the process of evaluating and growing their focus on planetary health. Especially as a student-led initiative, we hope that nursing students can feel empowered with the report card to create change in their programs that will benefit generations of nursing students.
