The Planetary Health Report Card for Pharmacy was initiated by Ellie Self, resident UK pharmacist and Dr Alison Astles, subject lead at the University of Huddersfield, UK. They adapted the medical school metrics in order to reflect the core principles of pharmacy education and professional pharmacy practice. The metrics were further reviewed by pharmacy faculty and students advisers in various countries to ensure they were reflective of and applicable to pharmacy education internationally. Ellie was joined by Dr Ashley Lam, Dr Kayla Pangilinan and Dr Ladan Karim-Nejad, resident US pharmacists (pharmacy students at the time) and Yewon Byun, a 4th year pharmacy student in the UK who co-founded the PHRC for Pharmacy and lead the PHRC for Pharmacy pilot. The pilot summary report was published on Earth Day 2022, alongside medicine’s report.
This is now PHRC for Pharmacy’s third year. Throughout those 3 years, we have seen a vast increase in the awareness and inclusion of planetary health in our teaching and from our institutions. We have been impressed and motivated by the planetary health work and teaching at our participating pharmacy schools. However, the climate is still in crisis and as a result, so is our health. Therefore, we pledge to provide 10 recommendations each year in our summary report, based on the positive work being done in our participating schools. And, therefore continue the call to action to our institutions to protect our planet and equip our future pharmacists with the knowledge and skills to work sustainably, in the best interests of our people and our planet.
We have big plans for the future! Inspired by our colleagues in medical schools, nursing, physiotherapy and dentistry, we believe this initiative is an effective driver for change in sustainable pharmacy education and important for progressing the global planetary health movement.
